四国沖南海トラフ沈み込み帯で行った三次元反射法地震波探査によって,これまでに明らかにされた三次元地下構造

Preliminary 3-D Interpretations of the Nankai Subduction Margin, off Shikoku, Revealed by the Japan-U.S. 3-D Reflection Seismic Investigation

 1999年夏,日米共同による南海トラフ沈み込み帯での三次元反射法地震波探査を行った(倉本ほか,2000).この調査は過去に南海トラフ沈み込み帯で発生してきたマグニチュード8クラスの巨大地震(海溝型巨大地震)発生帯をイメージング(可視化)し,その地殻構造や物性変化などを明らかにすることを目的としている.高度なデータ処理やその解析は現在も進行中であるが,初期成果として,四国沖南海トラフ沈み込み帯での三次元地下構造の概要が明らかになった(Kuramoto et al., 2000).たとえば海底の微細な地形(左上)や,付加体内の詳細な地殻構造(右上),さらに断層の三次元構造(左下)や,沈み込む海洋地殻の地形(右下)などが明瞭にイメージングされた.特に注目されるのは,プレート間巨大地震を発生してきたと考えられる領域の詳細な地殻構造(中央)が明らかになりつつあることである.
