ゴトランド島の化石サンゴ礁


Silurian Reef Limestone of Gotland, Sweden

 バルト海に浮かぶゴトランド島は, 埼玉県ほどの広さをもつ平坦な島である(面積3136km2, 最高点82m). ゴトランド島は全島がシルル紀の化石サンゴ礁からなり, 非常に保存状態がよいことで有名で, 1950年代まではシルル紀のことがゴトランド紀と呼ばれていたほどである. 写真はゴトランド島の北に隣接する小島, フォール島のガムラハヌン海岸で, ここでも四放サンゴ, クサリサンゴ, ハチノスサンゴ, 層孔虫, 石灰藻などの化石が, 面白いほど容易に見つけられる.
 ゴトランド島はバルト盾状地の一部で, 古生代以降には変動を受けていない安定地塊に位置し, 水平に浸食された盾状地の上に, シルル紀のサンゴ礁が成長した. 第四紀に入ると, この地域はスカンジナビア氷床の氷河に厚く覆われたが, 最終氷期が終了すると, 上部が氷河で削られた新鮮なシルル紀のサンゴ礁が露出した. その結果, ここから産出するシルル紀の化石は, 世界中の研究者によって調べられることになったのである.
