ティラノサウルス・レックス

Tyrannosaurus rex Osborn, 1905

 ティラノサウルス・レックスは恐竜の代名詞といって間違いないだろう.一般の方がティラノサウルスという属名だけでなく,レックスという種小名まで学名をフルネームで言える恐竜はティラノサウルスぐらいである.1905年にニューヨークのアメリカ自然史博物館のHenry Fairfield Osbornによって命名されたこの学名は,今年でちょうど100周年になる.有名で知り尽くされているようなティラノサウルスだが,嗅覚が特に発達していたことや,20年で全長12メートルクラスに成長して,これまで最大(最高齢)の個体は28歳だったことなど,この数年で明らかになったことである.同じ種の中でも大きくがっしりとした個体がメスである可能性が高いこと,生きたトリケラトプスTriceratopsを食べようとした証拠が発見されたことなどが,2005年6月にアメリカで開催された100周年記念シンポジウムで明らかにされた.まだまだ新しい研究,発見の続きそうな恐竜である.
