Volcanic Landforms of the 1957-1958 Capelinhos Eruption on the Azores Islands, Portuga

The Azores Islands (38°N, 30°W), which is an island chain extending to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, have experienced a history of eruptions recorded since the 14th century. The most recent eruption was the Capelinhos Eruption in 1957-1958, which occurred at the western edge of Faial Island. A crater with 2-km diameter caldera is located at the center of Faial Island, and a chain of parasitic craters extending WNW is located at the mountain slope. The Capelinhos eruption started at the ocean bottom at a water depth of 400 m in September 1957. The first stage of the eruptive sequence comprised explosions with large volumes of water vapor rising from the ocean surface, and when the volcanic conduit reached the ocean surface, the reaction between the magma body and the sea water generated an explosive eruption, which formed a thick layer of volcanic ashes on the island, as can be seen near the center of the photo: the nearest pinnacle is a dike which intrudes into the ash. The growing conduit water did not flow into it, and the eruptive sequence changed to a calmer eruption and showers of magma stage. The results formed the reddish brown flat hill with 160m a.s.l., which can be seen in the photo. This eruptive sequence ceased in October 1958, and new land with an area of 2.4 km2 was born connected to Faial Island.
